Cancer and Alcohol

At today's (12/3/17) NTCOF luncheon there was discussion about a new study than perhaps could be interpreted that any level of alcohol consumption may cause cancer. Initial reports seemed to not put the study in perspective, i.e., that some cancers may be reduced by alcohol, alcohol may be beneficia...

Other Churches Benign?

I attend a Unitarian Universalist church (UU) at least once a month and have claimed that a UU church is relatively benign. If you put the emphasis on “relatively”, I suppose I still think so. However, at last weeks (2nd Sunday) UU service, Amazing Grace was sung, with one of the verses extracted be...

The Big Sick

The Big Sick was engrossing, entertaining, recommended. https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_big_sick/ I did feel a bit let down that the movie did not really address the issues raised: arranged marriage, religion, family shunning. The religion plot did not get much past a statement that Kumail was ...

Bill Nye - Race or not

"The takeaway message here, as Jablonski points out, is that there is no such thing as different races of humans." [Bill, toward the end of chapter 32 of Undeniable.] Bill completely looses me with his conclusions about race. He just spent the whole chapter "proving" that there are differences and t...

Re: Richard Dawkins disinvited to conference

I know from posts I've seen elsewhere that some would be predisposed to question Dawkin's feminists credentials. However, without researching that issue I'm inclined to take the Dawkin's posting at face value. The piece appears to be humor (political satire? I'm not sure of correct terminology.) and...

Re: Sting's winter album "If on a Winter's Night"

I'm not familiar with Sting so cannot really comment to the body of work but I do not agree that appreciating myths and attempting to translate them to something useful at all means that we need myths that continue as such.

Proof of a God.

Interesting quote in Dallas Morning News today (Sunday July 13, 2014 Points front page): "think about it, no matter how smart they think they are, an atheist has to admit that he believes the equation: Nobody plus nothing equals everything.", a presumed quote from Rep. Louie Gohmert as carried in th...
